Pedagogical Practices

Main interactive methodology: PROJECTS

In order to make the most effective and meaningful learning, from Children’s Education to Elementary School I and II, we adopt the methodology of work with projects, and several other strategies that promote intellectual growth, emotional and social development of our students.

Subject proposals for projects arise in the pedagogical week earlier this year, when all educators participate and during school year, of course, other proposals arise because “School is alive”, Solar Integral School has very peculiar characteristics: dynamism, constant information, creativity and “movement”.

We develop projects and activities that may involve only certain segments and also all Solar. For this interaction to happen, we have suitability to age, and, therefore, pedagogical coordination with enormous skill, works next to each educator provoking reflections, making proposals, adjustments and stimulating creativity. Over the years we’ve exceeded classroom limits, we got a closer relationship of family and social reality. Note that we are facilitating and encouraging a process of greater commitment and responsibility of each student for their own learning.

Students – The idea of each project is launched according to some current event or need to study or research and according to the theme, there is a split, where each student or each group will choose its direction (example: Community – sanitation, health, community culture). From there, they begin the research and productions with teacher guidance and supervision.

If the class choose to work in groups, all components need to know any subject of their choice. Teacher will be following the development of each work, but the class will have autonomy to decide forms of presentation (3rd year onwards).

The project in smaller classes (Kindergarten to 2nd year of Elementary School) is developed with activities previously planned on daily basis. It is enriched with concrete activities and play materials, where there is language adaptation of every class and even with each student.

Teachers – It is up to our teachers, flexibility in face of changes and requests from students. A constant update on projects issues and on current changes in society. Coordination proposes meetings, workshops, studies, courses, research and training for that everyone is excited about the project: our concern and responsibility is also with the process; as each educator is developing the work and not only with the final result: presentations.

We create strategies for students to reflect on different issues, talk, argue and question. So, in any kind of work, there is a space for us to hear each student. At least once a week, each student must read, with a responsible, a newspaper report and talk about what you have read to the class (with the observations of those responsible as well).

This work in also realized at Children’s Education: at  conversations wheels, experiences, some content launch, stories…

Family – We want to involve and bring information to responsibles and we are succeeding. They have increased significantly their participation! Through surveys with family, questionnaires fill, participation in events with the children through positive comments, questions, we found a very positive change of family in student school life.

Contents have been developed in a pleasant and creative way. Teachers are more attentive and interested in learning new technologies that enrich classroom work. Incidentally, we also have the arts professionals who work in the mornings. Whenever is possible, they help us with ideas and their expertise. Ex.: Poetry Soiree, idea of a Portuguese teacher, we have ballet students, putting dance in the text.

We are closely interconnected with Computer: hiking, work, research and teacher training. Teachers and students have guidance and assistance of the computer teacher, accompanying content of all classes. In June, 5th year class went to Petrópolis with Portuguese and History teacher and with assistance and guidance of computer instructor. The study started in the computer lab, classroom and we completed with a visit to the Imperial City.

Meninos Solidários continue to develop a beautiful work at school, with family, at community and other institutions. Every year, we create an event that motivate more students and family. “Cinema at Solar” is an event where the ticket was a hygiene product order to assemble layette for babies and warm clothing campaign. With the warm clothes campaign came the 2nd phase of literacy class (1st year) – we have pictures of everything.

Literary Soiree – In order to encourage reading and so that our students know and know how to talk about readings, we recieved authors in Paulo Coelho Library. These meetings are scheduled according to the age group of interest of the guest.

For two weeks, the book chosen by the author is readen and worked in class. All research and information to receive the visitor, take questions, comments and suggestions. The result is rewarding.
