Afro Hairdo Contest at the Black Consciousness Week

29/11/2013

On November 29th, students from Nursery to 5th grade attended the 5th edition of the Afro Hairdo Contest in Meninos de Luz Theatre, a tribute to Black Consciousness Week and Zumbi dos Palmares day.

The project was an original way to show students a little more about black culture, its origins, behavior and traditions, always extolling respect to racial differences, whether they are African, Indian or Asian descendent. We also teach the importance of respecting others.

This year, there were news at the runway show. The hairdos were not made only of braids and headbands, turbans were also used to beautify the student’s hairstyles, since the accessory is a strong trend around the world.

The contest was held at the Solar Meninos de Luz Theatre and the jury was very special: Solar Meninos de Luz directors Isabella and Guilherme Maltaroli, and specialists in Afro hairstyles, Cindy Marzano and Vanessa Matos. High school students, Arthur, Naisha and Paula were also part of the group. The criteria were: animation, lightness, whimsy and the hairstyle itself.

Each class was awarded with a 1st, 2nd and 3rd place! Students were excited to receive the prizes – toys donated by partners and volunteers.

Parents and guardians helped with makeup, hairstyles, and the theatre was full of proud parents watching their little models!
